"Save the baby conchs" play

On 10 May 2009, after almost two months of rehearsals, students of the Richard Rose school from the Utila Keys presented to their colleagues a dramatization called "Save the Baby Conchs". The same play was repeated on the same day in the evening as a part of the Mothers' Day celebration. The goal of the play was to raise awareness to the fact that the conchs, once abundant in the water around the Keys and Utila, are now almost depleted, mostly due to the overfishing and taking immature conch before they had the time to reproduce. It takes 3-4 years for conchs to reach maturity. The mature conchs can be recognized by the well developed "lip". As a follow-up to the play, Key students plan to establish a "Sea Kindergarten", a no-fishing zone just off the Pigeon Key coast, which will be managed and monitored entirely by the students, under BICA supervision.
